Hello All ~
I am new to this forum and have been so amazed by the warm reception that I have received. So I have a question that was brought up in the Intro section that I thought I would bring over to this thread. Do you think that the suboxone acts as an anti-depressant somehow/someway?

I have been on 24 mgs per day for 9 weeks now. Started on March 19th, and I have to say that I couldn't be happier. I mean I am really happy. Does Suboxone Act as an Anti-depressant for you? Icon_smile Now I do have some issues -- I can't seem to get my dose under control, I have had some weight gain and edema. BUT I am happy, have a lot of energy, and am interested in life. One important thing to stress is the interested in life thing. When I was short on percs/vics I was not happy and not interested in life at all....

As a bit of background, I have been an opiate user for over 10 years. Started with a back injury -- that never went away -- or at least that is what I told myself and the doctors who gave me my scripts!

Anyway, anyone else experiencing the happiness/anti-depressant type of feeling?

Thanks! FAD

Does Suboxone Act as an Anti-depressant for you? Friday10

Hi FAD
If I remember correctly we had this conversation somewhere on the forum before. I just don't remember where that discussion is right now. But a lot of people have said the same thing as you. Once they started Suboxone it helped them to stop feeling so depressed. Even though Suboxone was approved to treat addiction, I know it has helped others with depression.

It could be that you are looking forward to your new life. A life free of opiates and the chains that comes along with addiction. No longer do you have to worry about running out of pills within a week. When you were using did you find yourself planing family events or attending get together around your supply of pills? I know that I did. And that really su*ked. A prescription wouldn't last any time. If I had it, I took it and before you knew it, I was completely out of my medication. I found myself "borrowing" from friends and when that didn't work, I would do whatever I could to find some.

Starting Suboxone is like a big cloud being lifted. You start to enjoy life again. There will be times that you will feel great and there will also be times that you don't feel so great, but those are normal emotions. When was the last time you were able to feel a normal emotion?
I seemed to have gotten off track of your question and I apologize. That is me, once I get going it is hard to stop me.
I will close this up for now. I am sure that I will have more to say tomorrow.
sleep well

Hi Dee,
Thanks so much for writing back. WOW -- I just can't believe how supportive everyone is.... Here and in the introduction. it is really just amazing. I like this forum very much because I just feel very welcomed.....

So I went to my therapist this morning, the person that I will be seeing once a week. My doctor demands that her patients go to individual therapy once a week and then also a group type setting. I haven't found the group yet, but I am sure that I will.... (I hope!).

Anway, I spoke to the therapist about Subs acting as an anti-depressant and she said that she was going to check into it and get back to me.

I just have to say that today marks 9 weeks on suboxone. I have to say that I am quite proud of myself! Wow.... This could be the longest I have gone wtih out drugs (well you know what I mean) in 10 years! How could 10 years have gone by so quickly?

Thanks so much! Does Suboxone Act as an Anti-depressant for you? Icon_biggrin Does Suboxone Act as an Anti-depressant for you? Icon_biggrin

Hi FAD, Just to add to Dee's post. My provider (addiction specialist) told me a couple of weeks ago that Suboxone does have anti-depressant qualities to it. She even drop my Cymbalta (anti-Depressant) down a few weeks ago. I really didn't notice the drop. I heard on the internet somewhere that they were testing Suboxone as an anti-depressant.

Talk to you soon.

YES. I have found a major improvement in my mental health that I think goes beyond being drug free. Before I got and stayed clean, I had FIVE stays in rehab in just ONE year. At one of those I was finally diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder. I had been mistakenly diagnosed in the past with a variety of mental illnesses. When I looked up BPD, it was like somebody had written a diary about me without me knowing. It was probably 98% accurate. When I took my very first Suboxone dose, I could not believe the feeling. It was literally the FIRST time I thought I was feeling normal EVER !! the difference is that it was nothing like abusing opiates. No high, just NORMAL. BPD is one of the hardest illnesses to address with therapy and there are really no good, accepted meds for "fixing" it. After a while on Suboxone, I noticed a major improvement in my BPD symptoms. BPD causes horrible mood swings; seeing everything and everyone as black or white,, either all good or all bad and the swings are exhausting to deal with. I started doing some of my own research and Lo and Behold, BPD in some people is traced to problems with the mu receptors in the brain. Guess what Suboxone acts on? the mu receptors in the brain. So I think by accident, I stumbled on a good med for BPD treatment.

It makes sense too. Chemical depression is an imbalance in the brain. If the person's brain was not properly keeping certain receptors filled and balanced in the brain and Suboxone does it, people should feel better, especially those whose brains were especially unbalanced in the areas that Suboxone works on.

That said, knowing how the DEA/FDA operate, no matter how much evidence is found that Suboxone may help or even be the BEST treatment for certain mental illnesses,, there is almost no way that they would open that can of worms. Could happen but I wouldn't count on it. and HEAVEN HELP the suboxone doctor who prescribes Suboxone off-label for mental illness treatment

SO, IF you are feeling good taking Suboxone, don't over-react. It is good to be self aware to make sure you aren't taking it to feel high but if it is just making you feel GOOD as in NORMAL GOOD, that is a good thing and quite possibly just a GOOD BENEFIT of the suboxone treatment
